genre: middle grade realistic fiction
Ghost isn't really his name, but it's the name he chose for himself. And when you're a middle schooler from a tricky neighborhood, when your family has been dealt a severe trauma and when moving your feet has always been just about the only way you can get around, anything you can choose for yourself is a good thing. When Ghost stumbles upon a track practice and sees kids running for SPORT, suddenly, his world opens up just a little bit. With a gruff coach and teammates whose lives are as complicated as his own, Ghost just might be able to find the thing his heart is looking for.
My twin 11 year old boys and I listened to the audiobook of this story on a road trip and it was a complete and total hit. The reader was amazing. Ghost is SUCH a sympathetic character. He makes some really bad decisions that he has to deal with the consequences of. He learns how to be a friend and how to show up for himself. Ghost's life is so different, in some ways, from the lives of my sons - but in other ways, he is EVERY middle school kid. The writing is paced so well and the tone really resonated with my kiddos. Five stars from all three of us.
