Genre: historical fiction
World War I has begun and so very many young men have shipped off to France. London's Kew Gardens still needs to be tended, though, so when Ivy and Louisa apply to work as garden staff, they are grudgingly hired. Even though they come from different parts of England, with different backgrounds and worries, Ivy and Louisa become fast friends as Kew Gardens becomes a refuge for those who are left behind. When happenings on the Front ripple their way to London and as the Suffragettes determine how to best support the war effort, only the strongest of ties will survive the strain.
Fast and readable, this solid piece of historical fiction looks close into the role of women in war time - what they are allowed to do, what they are actually capable of and the roles they deeply wish to fulfill. It's about relationships and standing up for what you want and creating your own kind of family. There wasn't really a romance thread that interested me but it was tightly written. I liked it.
