genre: historical fantasy
I truly enjoyed the His Fair Assassins Trilogy by this author and when I found out there was a duology in the same medieval French world, I knew I wanted to see what happened to the Daughters of Mortain! While nearly all the previous characters are involved in some small way, the main characters in this installment are Sybella and Genevieve, two women who have managed to survive in a world of political intrigue but whose connection to the convent itself has been stretched thin. With the French king preparing to wed the duchess of Brittany and treachery around every corner, Sybella and Genevieve do their utmost to perform the tasks they imagine Death would want them to - but at what cost?
Oh this was delicious. Oubliettes and assassins, palaces and battles, disembodied souls and the constant stress of not knowing who to trust, I read this one so quickly! I really liked switching between Syb and Gen's storylines, knowing more than they do sometimes about what's happening in a world where communication is so challenging and so much is at stake. I will say it has a crazy abrupt ending so I'm off to read the final installment!
