The Wretched of Muirwood by Jeff Wheeler

genre: young adult fantasy

Lia is a wretched - a person with no family who must rely on her own hands and the charity of others.  Raised as a servant inside Muirwood Abbey, Lia's entire life has been spent near those who are allowed to learn.  But she is not.  When a bloody stranger lands on her doorstep, Lia's boring and restricted life is suddenly full of danger and a kind of adventure that she's never experienced.  As political tensions rise, Lia has to decide if its worth leaving the life she's always known to do what her heart tells her is the right thing.

The first thing I should say is that in the end, I really did like it.  I thought things pulled together in an interesting way and Lia started to be more of an intriguing character.  As the story got more intricate, I liked how the magical/fantasy element of "the Medium" worked and the romance began.  If you happen to be Mormon, you might find some things that seem familiar, although not in an annoying way at all - I actually really liked that.  It took me a while to get into though.  It didn't grab me.  I really only kept reading because I'd bought the entire trilogy on my Kindle during a crazy sale and I hate wasting money.  Lia felt immature and shallow and the beginning really dragged.  After she has some stretching experiences, I began to like her better.

My sister has finished the trilogy and says its worth it, so I'll finish it.  Especially since I already paid for it.
