genre: young adult science fiction, climate fiction
In a world that's not longer safe for humans to inhabit, Kasey and Celia live in an eco-city, where they are protected from poisoned air and toxic water. But Celia is a free spirit and much to Kasey's dismay, Celia disappears - and no one has any idea of where she's gone except Kasey. Meanwhile, we meet Cee, who is stranded on an island - desperately wanting to get back to her sister but finding the task nearly impossible. These two sisters, opposite in almost every way, both want the same thing: to be together again.
Woah. This book started off so crazy good to me. The writing is lyrical and beautiful, I didn't mind the switch between Kasey's super sciencey, high-tech city third person narrative and Cee's first person survival life on the island. I found it intriguing and it made my brain stretch. And then...it made my brain stretch too far. Somewhere in there, starting about the last fourth of the book - after a couple REALLY good plot twists - it just lost me. As in, I cannot actually tell you for sure how it ended, it was so confusing to me. It was actually a total shame because I was ALL in. I loved what it made me think about being human, about relationships and connections, about this possible climate crisis future - so much good here. But I can't in good conscience give it more than 3.5 stars because rarely has a plot made me quite so bewildered.
ps - isn't the cover crazy gorgeous though???
