Shiver by Allie Reynolds

 genre: adult thriller

Milla's time as an elite snowboarder has been over for ten years, but when she gets an invitation to meet up with some old friends at their former training slopes in the French Alps, she can't resist.  She's not on the mountain long, though, before she realizes that something isn't quite right.  Between herself and her four companions, at least one of them was involved in the disappearance of one of the members of their group ten years ago - and from some strange happenings at the clearly deserted resort,  they aren't the only ones at their reunion.  What DID happen to that missing snowboarder?  Milla gets the sense that there is something going down and she wants to get to the bottom of it, if only to make sure she's not next.

Okay, this NOT my usual kind of book, as people who know me already know.  However, I got this one from my online book club so I gave it a try - and I was completely sucked in!  I read it so fast, I really liked the plotting where the whole book is two different chronological storylines that take place ten years apart, so we are learning things in the present and things about the past all through the point of view of our narrator.  Is she a reliable narrator?  I could never tell!  And I'm sure that was part of made it such a rush of a read.  I also know nothing about snowboarding, so it was fun to get a peek into the competitive world of extreme sports.  That and the snowy mountain setting, so atmospheric!  It's not the best book I've ever read in terms of the writing itself and honestly, Milla is a frustrating and super self centered character but I didn't guess what was going to happen and it reminded me that I really do like a locked room mystery now and then.
