Bond. James Bond. Yes, this is the first James Bond novel and it takes place in a coastal resort town in France. Bond is a secret agent, obviously, and he's out to get a Russian spy operative while using his expert gambling skills. I mean, it's so cliche at this point, it's hard for me to imagine what this novel would've been to people who'd never read a "spy" novel, to people who'd never heard of James Bond. Casino Royale is spycraft, yes. It's high stakes and political intrigue. It's also, surprisingly to me, romance and introspection. I hadn't anticipated Bond to feel his feelings quite so deeply - he comes off as such an cool and removed playboy in the movies that his persona in this book came as a bit of a shock. Of course, he also likes walking down the beach post-swim whilst nude so, he's quite a character.
It's fine. I'm not sorry I listened to it because I listened to the dreamy voice of Dan Stevens reading it to me, so, while it was pretty blah, I wasn't disappointed in the time spent.
