I'm not going to lie. I picked this up at the library because I thought the cover was beautiful. Why are they underwater? Why is he holding her so protectively? I had no idea of what it was about.
And water doesn't really have anything to do with it, but I get it now.
When Mara wakes up in the hospital, she hears the devastating news: her best friend is dead and no one knows what happened except Mara. But the thing is, Mara doesn't remember. Anything. And between the not remembering and the psychotic visions she's been having, she is worried that she is going, literally, crazy.
Starting over in a new school, Mara slowly begins to the learn the depth of how WRONG she is in her head. And, of course, there is a boy. The kind of crazy perfect, naughty and mysterious boy that you want to fall in love with you, but you know might actually break your heart if you let him in.
That's all I am going to say. This was too stinking good for me to spoil it for you. It is SCARY and romantic, the kind that had me up all night trying to finish it. I appreciate that it deals with the sensitive topic of mental illness with care and awareness while giving it a splash of paranormalcy, so that you just never know what is real and what isn't. It's part of what made it so deliciously scary. There is some offensive language, for those who are sensitive to that, I probably wouldn't let my daughter read it until she was 15 or 16. However, I personally will be getting in line to read the second installment as soon as I hear it is out - be ready for a cliffhanger ending.
