genre: contemporary romance
The fact of Emily's love life crashing and burning coinciding with her sister's April's horrible car accident meant that when she had nowhere to go, Emily could help out April with her teenage daughter while April recuperated. What Emily did NOT anticipate was that being the auntie in charge meant signing up to volunteer at their local Renaissance Faire for the summer. As a serving wench at the tavern at the faire, Emily will have to not only serve drinks and act the part but also interatct with the faire's person-in-charge Simon. Simon, whose brother started the faire and whose irritability and lack of humor could totally spoil the summer.
I stumbled upon this book at the actual Maryland Renaissance Festival, where the author happened to be doing a book signing that day! So I bought this book from the stall across the way and had her sign it - and how incredibly meta for this book to be about a relationship that BEGINS at a renaissance faire! This was a fun, fast read, just the sort of brain candy I needed. This wasn't trite or so tropey that it annoyed. Emily's concerns felt realistic and the love interest kept me intrigued. The cosplayish vibe of the faire as the setting was really fun for me. I mean, it wasn't the deepest book I've ever read and it was predictable for sure - and I still had a great time.
content: language and a few open door scenes that could be skipped
