genre: graphic history
I've been hearing about "the pirate queen" since I was a girl - my grandpa was convinced we are related to her somehow through his line - so when I saw this at the library I grabbed it. It tells the story I'm familiar with but with a lot more detail fleshing it out. I don't know how much of it is actual fact but it does tell an interesting tale of colonization and war and the fight over a much-desired piece of land. Grace O'Malley WAS an interesting woman and her audience with Queen Elizabeth does seem to be undisputed - and I find that amazing. I found the art to fit the story pretty well - far more "comic book" than "graphic novel" but again, it fits. It's a violent, battle-filled book but it was a pretty violent and battle filled time, so, there you go. It didn't blow me away but I found myself interested the whole way through.
