genre: literary short stories
It's hard for me to know how to describe a collection of stories, since each one can slide across my brain in a different way. Is there an overall theme? If so it is a deep one, as these characters interact with death, new life, relationships and tragedy as though these upending ideas are par for the course. We are in the minds of children, husbands, mothers and teens as they suck the juice out of whatever life has handed them. Overall, the literary style is so poignant, the turns of phrase so lovely - that even as I'm reading about something tragic or upsetting, I'm finding myself amazed by the wordsmithing itself. I probably would've never picked this up on my own (I never choose short stories) but I'm glad that this came in one of my book subscriptions because I feel like my inner world has expanded a little bit as I have spent time in these Black lives.
