I think if you haven't read the Ember in the Ashes series, this book might be hard to understand or follow. But for someone who LOVES the books, it was such a pleasure to go back into this world again. We have gone back in time, before the beginnings of the books, to when Elias and Helene are Fivers and they have a mission to accomplish. Along with their friend and fellow student Tavi, they must use their training to find something and bring it back to Blackcliff - but the task is not an easy one. I mostly appreciate that this book helps us better understand Helene but most especially Elias, and give us insight into why he was making the choice he did at the beginning of Ember in the Ashes. The ultimate question is this: where does your loyalty lie?
