We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson (audiobook)

 genre: horrorish

Mary Katherine and Constance are the Blackwood sisters.  They live with their uncle in their big house on the edge of town, content with their solitude and completely dependent on each other.  The Blackwood house has a secret, though, a secret that neither sister is willing to unearth.  With their bizarre rituals and routines that help to mollify their uncle's unstable mental state, Mary Katherine and Constance have managed a peaceful existence.  Until someone unexpected arrives at their door.  And that unexpected person disrupts everything the sisters had worked so hard to manage.

Another atmospheric novel for this creepy time of year, this one really hit the spot!  Our narrator, Mary Katherine, is deliciously unusual and being in her head twisted the story into the disturbing tale it is. I have so many questions!  For a short novel, it packs a true punch and Shirley Jackson is a master of creating a sense of unease, where things just feel OFF.  If you are into the macabre but don't need things terrifying and bloody - just mysterious - this might be a good story for you.

The audio production was very well done.
