With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo (audiobook)

genre: contemporary young adult

Emoni isn't scared to do the hard things.  When she got pregnant at the beginning of high school, she followed her heart and kept her baby.  She works hard as a mom, as an employee at her job, as a student in her senior year.  She also works hard in the kitchen, the place where she feels most herself, creating dishes and flavors that have her own signature zestiness. When she has an opportunity to take a real culinary class as school, she knows it's going to be hard - but that's never stopped her before.  She just has no idea what she's in for and where that choice is going to lead.

I could listen to Elizabeth Acevedo read to me all day, her audiobooks are so well done.  The plot moves through Emoni's senior year of high school, as she deals with parenthood, boys, friendships and her own pride.  Emoni is a powerhouse, fiercely loyal and she owns her choices.  She's not perfect, though, and the natural consequences of her actions create part of the conflict in this story of family and responsibility, home and food and, most of all, darling to dream of the future you really want.
