Eventide by Sarah Goodman

 genre: young adult fiction

When Verity's father looses touch with reality, she and her younger sister Lilah are forced onto an orphan train that takes them from the only home they've known in New York to the backwoods of Arkansas.  It's the turn of the century and while Verity knows her choices are limited, she has big dreams - and they all involve taking care of Lilah.  But when they arrive in Arkansas, Lilah is placed with one family - and Verity with another.  While Verity tries to be patient with this development, things in their new little town start to seem off - starting with the Wood, where Verity has been warned not to wander.  As her concerns become more real, Verity will have to learn more about her own past to try and untangle the spooky happenings of the present.

This story just didn't grip me the way I'd hoped.  The scene and setting never really made me feel like I was in another place and time and the magic element needed more fleshing out.  There were several plot holes that pulled me out of the narrative, although it is an easy enough read and I wasn't BORED. I just wasn't dying to read it and it took me way longer than it should've to get through.  The romance was a bit too insta-love for me and I guess overall it just might be for a different kind of reader.   I know that ghosty stories aren't generally my favorite anyway.  This adult just didn't feel it.
