Bridgerton: The Duke & I by Julia Quinn

 genre: historical romance

Apparently during Pandemic Christmas Seasons, I read romance novels.

This one I chose particularly because I saw a trailer for the Netflix series that looks lavish and fun.

Daphne's prospects for marriage appear bleak - not because she isn't a member in good standing in the ton (she is) and not because she isn't lovely and witty (she is) but she's just too..honest.  Too friendly.  Just too amiable for the right kind of suitor to try for her hand.  What she needs is someone to make the other eligible men notice her.

What she needs is a handsome duke to pay her some attention.

Amiright?

Luckily, we have such a duke in Simon Bassett, a man whose isolated and loveless upbringing has resulted in his NEVER desiring to marry.  And he needs someone to help him keep the other ladies (and their pushy mamas) away.

I mean, what could go wrong?

Here is the thing.  This book has some truly witty banter.  There is also this plot devise of a ghostwritten society sheet that spills all the ton gossip that's great fun.  Daphne is a delightful character and Simon is so torturedly (yes, I'm maybe making up that word) wicked and handsome that you do want to take care of him (or punch his face).    I love Daphne's huge family (especially her older brothers) and how their dynamic shapes the story.  Yes, there are lots of bedroom times between married adults so you'll have to skip that if you don't enjoy bodice ripping.  The things that always annoy me about romance novels (the cheesiness, the predictability) were there but in less annoying ways that usual.

It's exactly what it says it is and the kind of fun I needed right now.
