The Shadowy Horses by Susanna Kearsley

genre: adult fiction, vaguely paranormal

Verity is an archeologist, taking a chance on a temporary position at a site in rural Scotland.  Not knowing all the details up front, she soon realizes that she is on a hunt for ancient Roman artifacts - and that there is more to this search than can be explained by science.  Trying to resolve what she sees with what she KNOWS, Verity's summer is even more complicated by the presence of one particular Scotsman, rounding out this story of history and slow-moving romance.

Turns out, I really like Susanna Kearsley's books.  I like her strong female protagonists.  The male love-interest tends to be a bit too amazing but I can't lie, it's sorta fun to read that.  I really like how she weaves the history into the story without the history BEING the story.  We are never in Roman times in this book, but we do learn a bit about it as well as about some of the finer details of archeology work.  I really love the Scots accents of some of the characters and the setting is lovingly portrayed.

I like that Shadowy Horses is more than just a "romance novel" - the book jacket plot summary makes this book sound like it is all about Verity and Davy but I felt like the mystery and the paranormal stuff was just as interesting.  Plus, the romance is fresh and exciting without ever being graphic, so YAY for love stories that are more that just love stories.  I will admit, sometimes I had to stretch my ability to suspend my disbelief, with the whole ghosty stuff, but once I did, I decided I like it.  It was an interesting twist.  I will certainly read another Kearsley.
