The Raft by S.A. Bodeen

genre: young adult

Robie grew up on Midway island, out in the Pacific Ocean.  So, naturally, long flights in very small planes are just par for the course. Except, on this particular flight, things do not go as planned.  This flight goes down.  And how Robie handles this fact as well as all that comes next will determine whether or not she and her fellow raft-mate will live to see the next day.

Yes, it's a survival story, but told in the voice of a typical teenager, both desperate to prove to herself what she is capable of and also really just still needing parents around to help and be in charge.  There is a mildy didactic environmental tone throughout parts of the book, although it wasn't super preachy.  More of a "LOOK at this that we are doing to our planet and its creatures."

A few parts are rather gross, there were a few intense moments and I was also caught completely off-guard by one plot twist.  I can't put my finger on why I wasn't THRILLED.  Maybe because I was just annoyed with her from the start of the book, when she's still in Hawaii and making the really poor decisions that land her on that plane.  In any case, it was a short and quick read that did hold my attention.

My first reaction when I saw this in the store was that the cover is HORRIBLE. She looks DEAD. Or maybe Zombie-like. Either way, it's not appealing.

I'll give it a pass.

I'm always on the look out to find a new survival book. Although your review isn't glowing I think I will give it a try. I always enjoy a quick read and I can't wait to see how much I can tolerate the main character. I'm glad I stumbled across your blog.
