book 1 of 8 for the Hans Christian Andersen Award Challenge
(not only was this illustrated by HCAA winner Maurice Sendak, but was also named a Caldecott Honor Book in 1954)
A very special house indeed. Krauss's text is so fun to read out loud!! The words sounded like a song, and indeed, there is no plot, just the sing-song imaginings of our artist and house builder. The illustrations were drawn almost like the doodled sketches of a dreamer's notebook. My two boys (aged 5 1/2 and nearly 3) loved the special house. And with chairs MEANT for climbing and beds MADE for jumping, who wouldn't?
