genre: mystery
This is a dark mystery, let's just say that to start with. The discovery of the body at the beginning is deeply disturbing and it there is never any light at the end of the tunnel we begin in. The story fluctuates back and forth in time as in present day, the Reykjavik police force is trying to determine the identify of the body that is found and in the past storyline, we are learning about a deeply disturbing marriage full of psychological and physical abuse. There is also a few subplots the follow the lives of two of the detectives and guess what, there is nothing good or happy anywhere. Not really at all. But, I knew when I chose to read one of the popular Icelandic novels I read about in a DIFFERENT book that it wouldn't be sunshines and rainbows. So I don't blame it for being the Nordic Noir that it is. It kept me interested and there are definitely some twists here. My three stars is because the side plots just never developed into anything. I feel like there was a lot of unnecessary stuff in here that was just sort of filler to maybe have plot for a next book in a series? I just felt like it could have been shorter and still packed a punch. VERY glad I did the audiobook even though it took me until I was about 3/4 through to even have a couple of the character's names straight.
