genre: speculative fiction
Despite having grown up in a Russian town, as a young child Dr. Damira Khismatullina became obsessed with elephants. Eventually she educated herself enough that she could spend every day in the care and keeping of these magnificent animals - and trying to keep them safe from the poachers who will kill these same animals without a second thought. Damira's choice to have her consciousness backed up on a server will lead to her involvement in the resurrection of the Mammoth as a species - and her role is what makes this story an incredible one.
I usually try to read without ANY spoilers but after the first few pages, I had to go read the jacket blurb to get my bearings. And I'm glad I did because then I was enthralled. The writing packs a punch and despite the real violence, I really wanted to know how this story would resolve itself. It's like a twist on Jurassic Park - how humans manage the species we revive and how THEY interact with US. The speculation here just really hit the spot with my brain and I'm glad I picked it up. Super fast and interesting read for me.
