genre: mystery
When a group of old friends head up to the Scottish Highlands for a New Years holiday, they anticipate the same kind of weekend gathering they are used to: reminiscing, some messing around, booze and good laughs. They've been friends since University, so it always feels easy to slip back into old times. Something about this particular lodge, though, and this stage in their lives, makes things feel just "off" from the beginning. And soon enough, in our narrative, we know there is "a body." We don't know whose, but we know it is dead. And among these old friends, we have to figure out not only who it lost - but who is responsible in the secluded Scottish forest where snow can make it hard for anyone to travel.
Yes, it's pretty formulaic. There really isn't a likable character in the mix. The writing is nothing particularly special. But about 3/4 of the way through, it did hook me. So many red herrings but that didn't bother me - I like guessing and being thrown off. I think my brain needed a little of this because I did end up liking it three stars worth in the end. Plus, Scotland.
