The Puppets of Spelhorst by Kate DiCamillo

 genre: middle grade fantasy

The five puppets know that there is SOMETHING out there for them. The King, the Girl, the Boy, the Wolf and the Owl have big dreams that lay beyond the trunk where they've been thrown.  With creativity and an acute attention to the small and beautiful details, the puppets will have much to see and much to learn as they are taken out into a world where they cannot control what happens to them but they CAN choose how they will manage their feelings about it.

I read this sparse chapter book to my twin 11 year old boys.  The chapters are short and the illustrations are so lovely.  It's not a fast paced tale, by any means, and they got a little bit disinterested in the middle, but by the last third they were eager to sit with me and listen while the puppets made their own connections between the life they dreamed of for themselves and the life they were living.  It's a little bit repetitive, but in a humorous way, and by the end we were all enchanted.

Thanks to Candlewick Press for a review copy of this book.
