I fell in love with Miranda Hart in her role as Chummy in Call the Midwife. I had no idea she'd written a book but when I was in Ireland I saw a used copy of this one in a bookshop. But then when I got home I realized what I really needed was to HEAR her tell me her book and I'm glad I did. This isn't really a typical "celebrity memoir" at all. It's just Miranda's rules for life, her observations on the mundane and, mostly, an acknowledgement that awkwardness is universal.
Parts of it made me guffaw out loud, truly. I know part of it is her delivery and part of it is the content. She startled me sometimes with the nonsense, I love it. Other times, though, it borders on cheesy and the conversations she has with her younger self, more often than not, lasted longer than I needed them to. I like it as a narrative device, it was just occasionally too much of a good thing. I like that she's just NORMAL. You can tell the book is a bit dated but overall, her ideas about living life as a normal/larger sized person, about it taking a while to find a partner, about finding a way to just enjoy the unique parts of ourselves - all that is still relevant today.
