Christmas at Valentine Inn by Jennifer Peel

genre: contemporary romance

Ever since Isabelle’s marriage imploded, she’s found her happiness working at Valentine Inn with her sister, Charlotte. Having watched Charlotte get engaged and find her own true love, Izzy really has to wonder if soulmates exist. 20 years ago, Isabelle thought she maybe had found her soulmate only to lose track of him. When that man, Patrick, shows up at Valentine Inn with his own past, it can’t help but throw Izzy and her heart for a loop - but does she even dare hope for a second chance with him?

OK, so, this really was not for me. It had such good reviews that I even purchased a paper copy and I wish I hadn’t because this one just did not hit the spot. The dialogue was beyond cheesy, the plot was so Hallmark-movie-scripted and tropey. Having teenagers myself, I just literally could not believe some of the things that happened in this book. The relationships did not feel real, and Patrick just was too good to be true, in all the ways. Not only that, but the author is really repetitive and uses fake words (what is your “ish?”) which got really annoying. I think this is just too “romance novel“ for me - I need there to be some real depth to the plot or it just feels like I’m in it to hear to people tell each other they love each other. And that gets old. Also, there is a subplot that is so unbelievable I just don’t actually know why I finished this book. Can you tell I am bitter? I am giving it two stars only because I somehow did actually care enough to finish it. But that’s all.
