Playing With Myself by Randy Rainbow (audiobook)

 genre: memoir

Do you know Randy Rainbow?  I've forwarded his videos to beloved friends for years because I am a huge show tunes fan and because the Donald Trump presidency was very hard for me personally and so his comedy really hit the spot.  This book is the story of how he got where he is - and it was absolutely as full of laughs and snide remarks as I'd anticipated.  I chose to listen of course because I think even his vocal comedy is fantastic.  Growing up in New York and then moving to Florida at a young age, Randy is very open about both what was hard for him but also where he found his chutzpah.  I loved his relationship with his mom and his grandma.  I found myself in tears TWICE because it was so tender!  I had not anticipated that.  I liked learning about his process and I guess it just boils down to the fact that I like his schtick.  Also, the man loves Fairy Tale Theater, which we all KNOW was the best thing to hit VHS during the 1980s.  The end.

My only real complaint is that there is a LOT of name dropping - but it is also amazing where his life took him. I mean, amazing.  And the way he DOES his name dropping is so comedic that even that was sorta funny anyway.  It's well written, the narration is literally exactly what I'd hope it would be and while I am a consistent 1.75x listener, I listened to him on only 1.25x because I needed him to sound like the Randy I love.

content warning: he swears in almost every sentence.  If you hate swears, don't listen :)
