I'm giving it five glowing stars. I was captured by Marcellus within the first two pages. I can see why some readers might have a hard time believing a story with an animal as a narrator but I fell for it completely. His voice and perspective were so surprisingly insightful, I could tell my brain was excited whenever I turned the page and it was his turn to tell the story. I felt like Tova's grief was real and her behavior made sense to me. The other characters in the book were complex with their own issues and while I could figure out a few things by the last 1/3 of the book, it still didn't happen quite how I'd guessed and I was so happy with the journey. Maybe it's a case of right book, right time, but this is one I want on my shelf.

Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt
genre: contemporary fictionTova lives alone. Having lost both her son and her husband in different tragic circumstances, she's found solace working the night shift at the Sowell Bay aquarium. While she cleans the floors and empties the trash cans, she manages to create a wild sort of friendship with the large Pacific octopus in residence: Marcellus. Marcellus is another of our narrators, as he is particularly astute with a feisty sort of old-man personality that shines through his "journal entries." What Marcellus figures out and how Tova's life changes when a stranger comes to town are at the heart of this tender book about the ties that bind us.
