The Secret Garden: a graphic novel adapted by Mariah Marsden and Hanna Luechtefeld

 Genre: graphic adaptation

The Secret Garden is a story I have loved since I was a little girl.  I have specific memories of the paperback copy I read on my sister’s bedroom floor, on my belly with my legs in the air, exploring with Mary Lennox in that manor on the moors.  This year I decided I wanted to read a specifically seasonal book during each of the four seasons - and what better book for spring that this story of rebirth and new life?  The art in this adaptation is colorful and vaguely muted, the characters are more stick-creatures than well-rounded cartoony, but it fits.   The FEEL of the story is exactly right.  I reveled in Mary’s snark as she works through her trauma and learns how to make (and be) a friend.  I watched the garden help her grow confident and capable as the wild world around her worked its magic.  I wanted to lay on the grass of this garden myself, letting spring and earth and sunshine soak into me and help me grow.
