Atlas of the Heart by Brene Brown

 genre: non-fiction

In Atlas of the Heart, Brene Brown takes us by the hand into the world of our emotions, explaining each one by name and by, most importantly, how those emotions can help us connect or disconnect with the people around us.   It is informative and interesting - but not only that, it is a guide for those of us who truly want to understand our inner world so that we can be at peace with it.  She gives us language to describe what we feel and a template for how to communicate about emotions in a way that is grounded and realistic.  It was rather astonishing, honestly, to realize how many different emotions we humans can feel - and as I read, I don't think there is one of them that I haven't either felt myself (the majority) or experienced someone I love feeling.  As a person who is currently in therapy trying to figure out my own emotional life, this book was the perfect roadmap, something to literally be referred to when a hard emotion feels heavy and I need to have help processing.

It's non-fiction, yes, but very readable in small chunks.  Lots of anecdotes flesh out the more scientific meanderings.  Many tools here to help people not just with relationships with others - but with their own selves.

Highly recommended.
