Sidi is the conscientious caretaker of his hives, with the bees over whom he watches taking up all of his love and attention. When tragedy strikes and a hive is torn apart, Sidi must get to the bottom of the problem. Likewise, when strangers making promises come to his village and religious ideas start to become law, Sidi realizes that not just the bees may be in danger from something foreign.
I am embarrassed by how little I knew about Tunisia before reading this gorgeously translated little book. It’s a short, parable-type story about our ability to make choices and protect the things we care about - even when we are up against something that seems much bigger and scarier than us. I loved Sidi’s love for his bees. I appreciated the complicated and frightening way that one’s religion can become politicized and how it can lead to so much violence. For such a small book, I found much to think about.
