genre: graphic memoir
In this short graphic novel/mostly illustrated story, our author depicts the inner life of someone who is battling the monster that is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. I felt like he did an excellent job of helping me, as an outsider, understand the depths of pain this disorder can cause - as well as what it takes to dig yourself out from its black hole. This book is told in a humorous and dark way, filled with the author's own cartoons (he's a cartoonist by profession) and it's all connected by short bursts of text that flesh things out. If you know someone who struggles in the same way or even if you've never met anyone who's dealing with mental illness (if that's even a thing) - you could still read this book and realize why the term OCD shouldn't ever be said as a joke or random adjective. It's a debilitating struggle and Jason Katzenstein puts a compassionate yet painstaking face on it.
