Slay by Brittney Morris

genre: contemporary young adult

Kiera Johnson isn’t just one of the only Black kids at her college prep high school - she’s also the developer of SLAY, a multiplayer online role playing game dedicated to Black culture. But no one knows that fact. And Kiera needs it to be stay that way. Except when someone in the offline world is killed over a SLAY dispute, Kiera’s online life is about to come crashing into her real one. And she can’t solve it all on her own.

What an interesting read! Kiera is a crazy intelligent main character who is also still a teenager figuring things out - important things about who she is and what she really wants. I loved the idea and execution of SLAY, so creative, and I really appreciated how Kiera processes the idea that there isn’t only one “right” way to be Black and that Black excellence encompasses all that Black people have to offer - on their OWN terms. The ending wrapped up fast and a little too neatly but the ideas in this book were huge and I found them really engaging.
