genre: graphic memoir
This short collection of comics is designed to help non-Muslims get a look into the sort of experiences a Muslim woman living in American might have. Some of these experiences show they Huda is just a PERSON - she likes pizza and video games just like a lot of other people. But a lot of her experiences are shaped by the hijab she wears and her identity as a Muslim woman. Misunderstandings, microagressions and flat out aggression are played out on the pages and met with a whole range of Huda's emotions. Humor and sarcasm are Huda's go-to and the two of my sons who read this book over my shoulder with me laughed out loud many times. There are important ideas to remember here, ways I can remember to not act ignorant and thoughtless. Entertaining and thought-provoking, the art didn't impress me but the book as a whole did.
