Furia by Yamile Saied Méndez (audiobook)

 genre: contemporary young adult

For Camila Hassan, fútbol is life. To reach her dream of playing on a real team in the United States, Camila plays her heart out for her local team in Rosario, Argentina. Camila's home life is complicated, though, and her parents would loose their minds if they found out their daughter was sneaking off to play fútbol - even though their son and Camila's brother already plays on a professional team. What she might have to give up for her dreams, the choices she makes and the context of the Argentinian world she lives in, it will all have to be navigated but Camila, La Furia, she's got what it takes.

This book made me want to cheer and burst into tears!   There is SO much here: a romantic thread that is nuanced and demonstrates how to create healthy boundaries, a dysfunctional marriage and its consequences, a society that is crazy about soccer but where women and young girls are chronically unsafe and undervalued.  I loved how rich this story is with ideas that matter and while Camila isn't perfect, for sure, she learns and grows and figures out how to advocate for herself in a way that really resonated with me.  I truly felt immersed in Argentinian life and by the time I was finished, I was 100% a fan of La Furia.
