That Inevitable Victorian Thing by E.K. Johnston

genre: alternate history/steampunk/young adult

Victoria-Margaret knows she is going to be queen and she's at peace with it - but she would, however, like to have just ONE hurrah as a typical citizen of the Empire. Just one summer to NOT be the future queen and just be...Margaret.  Whoever the real Margaret might be without the weight of a kingdom looming.  Helena, on the other hand is already just a typical citizen, preparing for her first Season and on the cusp of being engaged to the son of a lumber magnate.  In this one summer, these three people will have a lot of growing up to do in a world where your genes help you find a suitable mate and "doing what you want" can have consequences you can't anticipate.

So much of this I liked - a future where British Colonialism has been redrawn to be a modern and racism-free conglomerate of nations and races.  There are modern and almost super-modern technologies but many Victorian Era layovers, an interesting mishmash of time periods and cultures.  There were scenes that captured the delight and surprise of first real love and everyone having their own secrets was an interesting plot device.  But, that was sort of the only real "plot."  And the ending, while I can see and understand why it happened how it did and there are some ideas worth discussing there, I couldn't help but have a hard time suspending my disbelief, which was a disappointing way to finish an otherwise pretty good book.
